Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website. Most of them exist because someone in a marketing department decided they needed more data. This page tells you which ones this site uses, what they actually do, and how to get rid of them if you prefer.
01
What Are Cookies?
A cookie is a small text file that a website stores on your browser. Some cookies are essential for a site to function. Others track behaviour, measure traffic, or remember your preferences.
Under the GDPR and the German Telecommunications Digital Services Data Protection Act (TDDDG, formerly TTDSG), cookies that are not strictly necessary require your explicit, informed consent before they are placed on your device. This site respects that rule — non-essential cookies are only activated after you click "Accept" on the cookie banner.

Substack & Email Cookies
If you subscribe to the Burned Out Diaries newsletter via Substack, Substack may set its own cookies when you visit the Substack-hosted version of this publication. Those cookies are governed by Substack's Privacy Policy. I have no control over Substack's cookie behaviour on their own platform.
Emails sent via Substack may include a tracking pixel that tells me whether you opened the email. This is standard newsletter technology. You can disable image loading in your email client to prevent this.

Changes to This Policy
If I add new cookies or change how I use existing ones, I will update this page and — where required by law — ask for your consent again. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision.
